Local Hida Takayama Cuisine for Breakfast

The breakfast buffet features some 70 local dishes, including a Hida Takayama favorite called hoba miso. There are so many things to choose from that you might feel like a deer in the headlights for a moment, but don't forget: it's a buffet, so dig in! The most popular dish is probably the Hida beef tsukune, minced beef and spices grilled on a stick, which is best fresh off the fire.

Sightseeing in Takayama

Stroll through Takayama's old quarter along rows of Edo period buildings and stop in at the myriad shops, cafe and restaurants, and sake breweries. Hop over to World Heritage site Shirakawa-go to check out the famous gassho-zukuri houses with their steeply inclined, straw-thatched roofs. Takayama also makes a great jumping-off point for Japan Alps destinations like Norikura and Kamikochi, both of which are particularly beautiful for their landscapes blessed by colorful autumn foliage.
